Orbital Data Centers Block Telescopes

The development of orbital data centers generates an infrastructure conflict with space agencies. Private companies are considering plans to expand constellations of commercial servers into Earth orbit. These space facilities are designed to support global artificial intelligence networks.

Orbital data centers, information processing facilities placed outside the Earth’s atmosphere, use solar energy and low temperatures in space to cool components. This reduces the operating costs of digital terrestrial infrastructure.

Space research institutes warn of the negative impact of these structures. They directly block the visibility of telescopes on the Earth’s surface. Massive constellations of satellites reflect sunlight back to Earth, with optical systems capturing these reflections in the form of visual noise.

These structures degrade the quality of astrophysical data through artificial light pollution. Sensitive deep-space observing equipment requires a completely dark sky to detect distant galaxies. Astronomical organizations are calling for strict regulations on the placement of commercial equipment in orbit.
