Google’s getting ready to pump $40 billion into Anthropic—the lab behind Claude models. This deal ties Anthropic to Google with exclusive cloud contracts and a shot at Google’s custom hardware. Training frontier models is insanely expensive—billions pour into data centers, chips, and energy, even requiring custom power plants and cooling systems.
Small labs really feel the squeeze. These costs mean they have to partner with the tech giants or risk fading out. Google’s move is seen as a way to keep Anthropic from linking up with competing cloud providers. Regulators will probably step in and take a hard look, with more corporate muscle crowding into the AI world.
